FAQs

The Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) is a crucial aspect of the financial preparation for international students planning to study in Canada. A GIC is a secure investment offered by Canadian financial institutions as a requirement for some international students applying for a study permit.
The GIC serves as proof that the student has sufficient funds to cover their living expenses while studying in Canada. It assures Canadian authorities that the student has access to a specified amount of money to support themselves during their time in the country.
Typically, students are required to invest a minimum amount of money in a GIC, which varies depending on the financial institution and the province. This amount is usually enough to cover living expenses for one year in Canada. ($20,635 CAD including forex charges)
The funds invested in the GIC are usually not accessible to the student immediately upon arrival in Canada. Instead, they are released in installments over a specified period, such as monthly or quarterly, to help cover living expenses.
Only certain Canadian financial institutions are authorized to offer GICs that meet the requirements set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for study permit applications.
Students interested in obtaining a GIC must apply directly through the participating financial institution's website or by contacting them directly. The application process typically involves providing personal information and documentation to verify eligibility.
